George’s Kitchen

We have lived in George for over a year and a half now, and the kitchen is holding up nicely. It’s organized, bright (tons of natural light) and functional.

Subway Titles

Once the cabinets were in, it was time to start on the backsplash. For the backsplash, the white subway title was the only option for us. I wanted to keep it clean and minimalistic. I ordered the tile online from BuildDirect (I found the website through DIY Playbook – love the ladies and their ideas), and my husband’s uncle did the job for us (you must love all your Polish construction web of contacts as I call it).

The finish backsplash looked amazing and exactly how I envisioned.

Before we painted the walls

Painting the walls

When it came to the paint colors, I picked all the colors for almost every room before we closed on the house. We painted the kitchen Benjamin Moore -Gray Owl which is a light gray with a tiny tint of green when the sun shines on it. The subtle contrast between the white tile and gray wall gives it a nice contrast and cleanness.

Our appliances (fridge and stove) came with the house and we decided not to have a dishwasher (for us it’s not a necessity and to be honest space is an issue).

Always a Blessing in Disguise

The only mishap that happened during kitchen planning and building process was my mis-measurement of the fridge. The cabinet I picked to go next to the fridge ended up being much taller than the fridge. At first, I was disappointment and consider exchanging it, but the thought of Ikea exchange process and building another Ikea cabinet….nope thank you. I decided it would be easier to just deal with it. I had filled the space between the cabinet above and the fridge with baskets I found at TJ Maxx that now house kitchen towels.

Kitchen Cabinets Handles

Handles for all kitchen cabinets are also from Ikea. To be honest, I didn’t event search for handles. I have read enough home renovation blogs to know that the handles are a big deal. But compared to the bigger project we had going on at George searching for handles didn’t seem that important. We went with Ikea’s LANSA handles. They look very minimalistic and clean. They work very well and after a year and a half they are still going strong.

Loving Me Some Mint!

We added a small island (kitchen cart according to IKEA’s website STENSTORP) in the center of the kitchen where we store our cooking books and eat most of our meals. Because the gray paint we used in the kitchen has tint of mint/green in it, we paired the island with mint stool.
