Why Gemütlich? Why George?

I have been thinking about starting this blog since the beginning of 2017. But, with a bag full of excuses, I procrastinated. I can’t procrastinate any longer. It has been my dream to document our journey of finding a perfect house and making it our gemütlich home. With a folder, full of pictures, let’s start now.

We started our journey of finding a perfect home in the spring of 2016. We picked a couple of neighborhoods we liked around Chicagoland and became regulars on Zillow and Redfin. But, decided not to view any houses until we were ready (are we ever truly ready for anything?). We had our eyes on this one house, which was definitely out of our budget. Then, one day at the end of August the seller dropped the price. We decided to see the house after we returned from our wedding in Poland (more about that in a future post), and we had our first viewing at the end of September. Even though we loved the house, after we walked through it we weren’t fully sold. We continued to look around and asked our agent to show us more houses in the area. None of those options stuck in our mind like the first one. The first one was calling us back! We went back and viewed the house one more time and made the final decision. We made the offer and the rest is history (buying our first house has been the most emotionally draining process EVER). When we announced to our friends and family that we decided to buy the first house we saw, they thought we were out of our minds. But, that house is special y ’all!

But what is Gemütlich?

ge•müt•lich or ge•muet•lich it’s a German word for comfortable and pleasant; cozy. I like the sound of it and the word perfectly describes what I want and how I imagine my home.

In November 2016, we closed on Mr. George (yes, you read it right! Our yellow brick Georgian has a name) and started the process of making him, our gemütlich home. 2017 is almost over and I can honestly tell you that making George our gemütlich home is not an easy, sweat free or relaxing process, except I found painting and patching extremely relaxing.
